The new series of Sartorial Society Sessions, Out of Sight: Concealed Dress, Dress that Conceals, begins 30 September and runs through 9 December.
“Histories of dress often focus on garments as human display: the identities that they perform and project out into the world. For the fourth season of the Sartorial Society series, we want to think beyond dress as outward appearance, and instead think about dress that is concealed and dress that conceals. From the supportive undergarments that act as foundations, to the outer garments that hide a secret identity, this season centres on dress that is or enables something to be out of sight.”
Those interested in the history of fashion, dress, and adornment will not want to miss this.

When knitting socks I use a small bag made from fabric left over from a dress my mom made me in grade 8. A few years earlier vests and skirts were in. I am now 61. We always got a new hand made outfit for the first day of school, my mom staying up late to complete the outfits for 6 kids You are joined by others who have such reminiscences.
I feel you on the thimble dilemma! I hand-quilt, and the only thimble I’ve found to my liking is the green Dritz one (shown here: https://www.dritz.com/product/soft-comfort-thimble-4/). I like the way the little divots keep the needle from sliding, and also the way its flexibility somehow keeps it in place on my finger.

Those are EXACTLY the pants I would picture you in.
It must have been about 1972 or 3, I was in the 5th grade, and my mom was teaching me to sew. I wonder if I can find this picture. I made a “smock top” with ties to be tied in the back. They ended up on the inside of the top. I made many of my clothes in high school and some for an internship in college. My goal was always store-bought looking jeans.
I really need a better sewing machine. All I make these days are masks and project bags. My kids are a bit more adventurous.

What beautiful visuals you create with your words! Thank you for that,for you have transported me to the 12 year old me, 47 years ago. And what sweet memories you have reminded me of, all the well fitting, made with love, clothing my Mother created for me. So many things I can’t remember but the love I felt while wearing the wonderful vests and shirts and pants and blazers she would sew me brought tears to my eyes just now. Thank you, so much!! So happy to hear you again! A few months back I saw you were back and I was overjoyed. I can’t tell you how often your soothing voice helped me through some tough times! I, too, have a sewing past. My grandmother told us we couldn’t help her bake until we made an apron. So we learned how to sew on a treadle machine. I think I still have a night gown I sewed for my daughter…it’s 34 years old. Bras? Maybe…never can find one that fits. I recently found myself yearning to be a new weaver… thanks for the thoughts.
On the problem of thimbles: I also could find no comfortable and usable thimble. I finally found an item called Thimble pad. They are small thick pads of leather that are sticky on one side. You put them on whatever area on whatever finger you use to push the needle. Very protective, not bulky and getting in my way. Several come on a sheet. Inexpensive.
